Prof. Michael Chia

Biography

Professor Michael CHIA is a full tenured Professor of Education (Paediatric Exercise Science) at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. His graduate and post-graduate training was from Loughborough University (BSc Hons 1st class, Physical Education & Sports Science) and Exeter University (PhD, Health & Exercise Sciences) in the United Kingdom. His professional credentials include certifications from American College of Sports Medicine, British Association of Sport and Exercise Science and the Outward Bound School Hong Kong. His research is published widely with some featuring national and international position statements on youth sport development and guidelines for physical activity, sedentary behaviour and sleep in early childhood, and childhood and adolescence. He leads an international research the on- and off-screen behaviours of preschool children in 20 countries (iissaar.com). In 2021, he led an international transdisciplinary team as leader for the theme 21st Century Lifestyle for the World Early Childhood Movement under the auspices of the Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority and successfully accomplished the project in September 2021. His research featured on BBC World Service and the Straits Times in Singapore. As an academic, he received several awards for his teaching, research, and leadership roles. He enjoys his work and his play tremendously, oftentimes, confusing work and play as the same.
